Protection and conservation of structural wood

Topic: Protection and conservation of structural wood

Modality: Theoretical

Place: CLEM-CIMAD 2017 venue – Sarmiento 1201, Junín, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Room: 201 (second floor)

Date: Monday, May 15, 2017

Time: 8:30 to 12:30 hours – 14:00 to 18:00 hours

Teachers:
Dra. Ana Clara Cobas (UNNOBA, Argentina)
Dra. María V. Correa (LEMIT, Argentina)
Dra. Vilma G. Rosato (LEMIT, Argentina)

Objective: To provide related professionals with the necessary knowledge and tools to interact in multidisciplinary projects where the essential structural element is constituted by wood.
It will cover contents that will provide a wide knowledge of the wood as a material as well as of its deteriorating agents, thus granting tools and criteria for a better protection and handling of this material.

Contents:

Unit I: The wood as a material.
Generalities of wood. Macro and microscopic structure. Chemical composition. Angiosperm wood structure. Wooden structure of gymnosperms. Main anatomical characters with diagnostic value. Physical properties. Mechanical properties. Timber put into service. The wood against other materials.

Unit II: Timber in service: stability and deterioration.
Deterioration, degradation, biodegradation and biodeterioration. Wood as substrate-environment. Natural durability. Degrading biotic and abiotic agents. Degrading organisms: xylophagous fungi, bacteria, birds, insects and mollusks. Case studies. General characteristics, metabolic functioning and interaction. Types of rot. Abiotic agents: Solar radiation, humidity, temperature changes, abrasion wear and fire. Analysis of deterioration. Study of deterioration patterns. Macro and microscopic techniques.

Unit III: Prevention of wood deterioration.
Basic principles of wood protection in construction. Methods of protection. Preservation with chemical products. Types of preservatives. Most used preservatives. Latest trends in preservation and consolidation. Techniques for application of preservatives. Methods with and without pressure. Coatings: concepts of surface treatments. Physical fundamentals of application of paints and varnishes. Wood as a material of important patrimonial constructions. Case studies and evaluation, techniques used and recommendations.

A certificate will be given.
Study materials will be provided.
